As soon as you get past the absolute newb areas and fight enemies lvl10 and up you will see some of them drop blue (and later on purple and gold) colored armor pieces. Buy an ID kit, these pieces will always have a minor rune or an insignia that you can take off with a superior or expert salvage kit and add to your own or a hero??s armor, provided they are the right class. Start testing the effect of runes and insignia with these free pieces, until you know what you want and can afford to buy.

Heroes use the same Runes/insignias and weapons that you do, so the components are gotten in the same way yours are.
